One of our favorite customers has a Deck Rail problem...the posts are leaning...and the gate is falling apart....and it's a 'floating deck', framed up on posts...and then posts are added and deck boards assembled....access problem...
there is a post set on the deck...and ship-lap jointed behind this trim board...
the exposed post is 5 1/2", nominal size for a 4" x 6" post...
but you can see that there is a post with a 2" board nailed to the side here.....the post is only a 3 1/2" post....
and the posts are leaning..and the gate
I can lift it straight up..
not an easy job...bring on the 'heroes'
here's the post construction with the trim board removed....NOW we can see the problem....need to do some vertical bracing and screwing....
here's the boards removed for access to the other side of the post...
we countersink 4" long deck screws...
here's the beauty of the deck...all put back together...see the gate? Good job...
We custom made vertical braces and stained with redwood
stain...after bracing the posts...we custom-cut these braces
and 'forced' them into place...allowing the bottom rail to
act as a leverage support....which kept the post from sagging
inward....kinda cool, huh? The "McGyvers in action"
take apart the puzzle...hmm
reassemble and use galvanized countersunk screws....yep!
this is without the stain...."I CAN HEAR THE FISH CALLING........''
